“Before a child speaks, it sings.
Before they write, they paint.
As soon as they stand, they dance.
Art is the basis of human expression."
Phylicia Rashad
Children, whether playing leading roles or extras, are often excited to work in front of the camera and gain insight into the behind-the-scenes world of film. To ensure a successful and positive experience for these young actors, it is essential that adults take into account a few important factors.
Children are individuals with specific needs and it is important to understand and respect their unique stages of development. Their levels of autonomy, communication skills, expressiveness and cognitive abilities can vary significantly depending on their age. To cater to these varying needs, it is important to have someone who possesses empathy, assertiveness and effective communication skills when working with children.
Clear instructions are necessary for children, but they also require a sense of security and understanding. A trustworthy person who can accompany the children on set, answer their questions and create an environment in which they can thrive is essential. The role of a child coach includes preparing for the role by helping the child learn their lines and practice their acting skills. Additionally, the child coach is responsible for ensuring the child's well-being on set, which may not always be suitable for children. This is done in close consultation with the director and producer to ensure that everyone is on the same page.
Having a child coach on board demonstrates that the production team takes the well-being of the young actors seriously, and ultimately benefits everyone involved.
As a film child coach, I have contributed to numerous films, for example the 2014 Elfi Mikesch film "Fieber" (Amour fou productions), which was screened at the Berlinale Film Festival, as well as more recent films such as "Rebel" (Calach Production) by Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi (2022, Cannes Film Festival), "Laif a Säil" by Loïc Tanson (2023, Samsa Films), and "Little Duke" by Andy Bausch (2023, Paul Thiltges Distributions).
